Guts Church Interns vs. Staff | Championship Basketball Game

“And David put his hand in the bag and took out a stone and slung it. And it struck the Philistine on the head and he fell to the ground. Amen.”

— Preacher Pearl, “Hoosiers” 1986

On Thursday January 31st, the Championship of Guts Basketball took place between the 2012-13 Guts Interns and the male staff of Guts Church. The Guts Youth Church building played host to this epic battle and both sides brought a bleacher filling crowd. Despite earlier reports, Pastor Bill Scheer switched sides on the staff men and coached the underdog internship team. After the game we asked Pastor Bill what advice he gave to the interns and he was quoted as saying; “I told them they have no chance to win. Just don’t quit.”

As the teams took to the court the vegas odds and Xbox simulations went out the window. It was just man against man, intern against staff. The game was very close early on as an over-inflated, lopsided carnival-style basketball kept both sides from making a simple layup. With a brief timeout, Guts DC Director Mike Sparkman made a much needed equipment substitution by putting an actual basketball into the game. With a new ball the staff men were a new team and their victory was quickly secured. While the score was never really in doubt, the outcome of the game doesn’t represent the heart and competitive nature of the 2012-13 Guts Interns. This years class showed excellence with their persistence. When all is said and done, this game will be looked upon as a telling tale towards the character of the Guts Interns. And maybe the 2013-14 class will be good at basketball…
