Push Past Anxiety

Pastor Bill Scheer teaches a Wednesday night message at Guts Church about pushing past anxiety, fear, and the constant pressure of what-if thinking.

Using Philippians 4, Pastor Bill explains that anxiety magnifies the problem while Scripture magnifies the promise. Faith doesn't pretend problems don't exist—it determines that the problem doesn't get to determine the outcome. Instead of allowing anxious thoughts and feelings to control our lives, we can replace them by speaking God's Word and standing on His promises.

Push past the fear. Push past the feelings. Get to the Word and stay there until what God has said becomes louder than what you're facing.

MESSAGE NOTES

  • Anxiety tries to pull your mind toward what might happen; Scripture anchors your mind to what God has said.

  • Push Past Anxiety to Scripture

Philippians 4:6–7

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

  • Anxiety says, “What if?”
    Faith says, “It is written.”

  • The battle is over what gets activity in your mind.

1. Anxiety magnifies the problem. Scripture magnifies the promise.

  • David faced Goliath, but he refused to let the size of Goliath become bigger than the covenant he had with God.

  • Fear may show up, don’t let it take over.

2. Push past your feelings to what God promises.

  • Feelings are real, but they don’t get the authority.

2 Corinthians 5:7

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

  • Faith isn’t pretending the problem doesn’t exist. Faith determines that the problem doesn’t determine the outcome.

3. Replace anxious thoughts by speaking God’s Word.

  • You don’t win the battle of the mind by simply trying not to think anxious thoughts. You replace them with speaking God’s Word.

  • Anxiety rehearses the problem. Faith demands God’s Promise.

Romans 10:17

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Anxiety → Speak the Word → Stand in Faith → live in Peace
