What message is really governing your life?
In this Guts Church message, Jeremy challenges us to go beyond simply knowing the story of Jesus and discover the life-changing truth of the gospel.
God knows you. God chose you. And He wants a relationship with you.
But are you allowing His Word to shape your identity, ambitions, decisions, and future?
From overcoming the lies that influence our lives to trusting God when things don't go according to plan, this message challenges us to surrender our preferences and live for a purpose greater than ourselves.
MESSAGE NOTES
God made you to be you. You can be you and love Jesus with all your heart.
You don't have to put anything on to come into God's house. You're already in.
John 10:30–33
"The Father and I are one." Once again the people picked up stones to kill him. Jesus said, "At my Father's direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?" They replied, "We're stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God."
Nobody has a problem with your good works. What gets rejected is the message that Jesus is God.
The story is that Jesus was born of a virgin, died on a cross, and rose again. The message is that a holy God handpicked you, and when we broke it, He came in the likeness of His creation to absorb our penalty.
God doesn't need you, and He gains nothing from you. That's what makes His love unconditional.
You didn't think God up. You were God's idea. Before you ever chose Him, He chose you.
We've dumbed the gospel down to church attendance. Does the message govern your ambitions, your identity, and your future?
1. You can't kill the truth.
If you're not submitted to the truth, you're submitted to something that isn't true.
The enemy doesn't care what else you believe, as long as you don't submit to this.
John 8:34–36
"I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free."
John 8:37
"Some of you are trying to kill me because there's no room in your hearts for my message."
If there's no room in your heart for this message, it's time to clear out some clutter.
They tried to kill the truth. They killed Jesus. But you can't kill the truth. You can reject it, but you can't get rid of it.
God never changes. He's the same yesterday, today, and forever.
2. Let the Word have the final say.
The Word is living and active. Let it coach you, teach you, and anchor your soul.
When someone else's words don't sound like this Word, they don't get to govern your heart.
Romans 1:16
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes."
One message leads to the salvation of your soul. The other leads to destruction. Which message will govern your life?
God isn't just the rewarder. He is the reward.
1 Thessalonians 4:13
We don't grieve like people who have no hope.
Perfect love casts out fear.
3. It comes down to surrender.
John 8:47
"Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God."
You haven't exhausted God. There's more of Him for you to know.
In the garden, Jesus surrendered His preference to the will of the Father: "Not my will, but yours."
God's will was you. What made it possible was Jesus saying, "I'll do it."
Surrender may hurt at first, but on the other side are a hope, a joy, and a peace that surpasses understanding.
Being right with God is confessing Jesus as Lord.
Let people see that Jesus is Lord of your life when you leave here.
